Window screen mesh types: standard, pet, no-see-um, solar
Screen mesh is a trade-off between what it keeps out and what it lets through. Here's the honest version of the four common meshes.
Standard fibreglass
The default. Blocks normal insects, cheap, easy to see through. Tears if a pet or branch pushes on it. Fine for most windows.
Pet-resistant
Heavier vinyl-coated polyester — roughly 7× stronger, shrugs off claws and pushing. Trade: a bit darker and less transparent than standard. Worth it on doors and low windows in pet homes.
No-see-um (fine weave)
Much tighter weave to stop tiny biting midges and sand flies. Trade: noticeably reduced airflow and a slightly hazier view — pick it only where the tiny bugs are a real problem.
Solar screen
Blocks 70–90% of sun heat and glare, cuts cooling bills on sun-facing windows. Trade: darker view out, and it dims the room. Best on west/south windows you don't sit right at.
FAQ
What's the best screen mesh for pets?
Pet-resistant vinyl-coated polyester — about 7× the tear strength of standard fibreglass. It's slightly darker but survives claws and pushing, which standard fibreglass won't.
Does no-see-um mesh reduce airflow?
Yes — the tighter weave that stops tiny midges also cuts airflow and makes the view a little hazier. Only choose it where those tiny biting insects are actually a problem.
