Curtain length guide: sill, apron, float or puddle
Curtain length is a style choice with four standard answers. Measure from the rod down — here's what each length looks like and who it's for.
The four lengths (measured from the rod down)
- Sill — ends at the windowsill. Tidy, practical for kitchens and bathrooms where floor-length is a nuisance.
- Apron — ends ~10 cm (4 in) below the sill, at the bottom of the trim. A clean casual look.
- Float — ends ~1 cm (½ in) above the floor. The tailored, modern default — clears the floor, no bunching.
- Puddle — 5–15 cm (2–6 in) of fabric pools on the floor. Formal, romantic; not for high-traffic or pet homes.
How to measure
Decide the rod height first (4–6 in above the frame is standard), then measure from the bottom of the ring/hook straight down to your chosen point. That's your finished length — order to it; a good maker allows for the header.
FAQ
What's the most popular curtain length?
Float length — just kissing the floor (about ½ inch clearance). It reads tailored and modern and avoids the bunching of puddle or the shortness of sill length in a living room.
Should curtains touch the floor?
For a crisp modern look, float them ½ inch off the floor. Puddle (pooling on the floor) is a deliberate formal style; sill or apron length suits kitchens and baths.
